The Bennington Badgers boys golf team delivered a historic performance Tuesday, capturing the EMC Conference Championship with a new school conference-record score of 303 and defeating a competitive field that included perennial power Norris Titans.
Leading the way for the Badgers was Austin Jochum, who claimed individual EMC Champion honors while also setting a new individual school record with a 71.
Bennington head coach Craig Nichols said the accomplishment reflected more than just strong scores on the course.
“What I’m most proud of after this tournament win isn’t just the score or the record, but the way our guys competed from start to finish,” Nichols said. “They stayed composed, played smart golf, and stayed patient.”
The Badgers received strong contributions throughout the lineup in the conference-winning effort. Kale Lamberty earned a fourth-place medal with a 75, while Jax Gifford medaled seventh after shooting a 77. Caleb Clark added an 80 and Reid Thornburg carded an 81 to round out the scoring.
Nichols noted that defeating a strong conference field made the title even more meaningful.
“Winning the EMC Conference Championship against such strong programs—especially a team like Norris that has set the standard for the last few years—makes it even more meaningful,” he said.
Nichols praised Jochum’s leadership and the collective effort from the entire roster throughout the day.
“Austin Jochum played outstanding golf and showed great leadership, and the rest of the lineup stepped up in big moments to keep us in position all day,” Nichols said. “It truly was a total team effort.”
The conference field also included teams from Blair Bears, Elkhorn Antlers, Elkhorn North Wolves, Gretna Dragons, Hastings Tigers, Lincoln Northwest Falcons, Standing Bear Grizzlies and Waverly Vikings.
With the record-setting performance, Nichols said the team continues to elevate the standard for the program.
“More than anything, this group has continued to raise the bar for Bennington golf,” he said. “They’ve bought into improving every day, and this result is a reflection of that commitment. It’s a great accomplishment, and one they’ve earned.”
Despite the historic day, the Badgers are already turning their attention toward postseason competition.
“At the same time, we know there’s still work to be done and goals we want to achieve,” Nichols said. “Our focus now shifts to Districts at River Wilds and the State Tournament at Scottsbluff Country Club.”
