The Bennington Badgers girls soccer team faced a demanding schedule this week, playing three competitive matches in five days that showcased their composure, defensive strength, and fighting spirit.
The week started on Tuesday, April 14, with a home match against Gretna that ended in a 0-0 draw before Bennington prevailed 4-3 in a penalty kick shootout. The Badgers converted all four of their attempts, with successful shots from Claire Miller, Addie Nelson, Rihanna Rodriguez, and Aliya Molina.
Bennington returned home Thursday, April 16, for a conference matchup against Blair on senior night. The game remained scoreless through regulation and into the first overtime period before Blair scored with nine minutes remaining in the second overtime to secure a 1-0 victory.
On Saturday, April 18, the Badgers traveled to face Elkhorn North and fell 3-1. Bennington’s lone goal came from a well-executed set piece: Claire Miller delivered a free kick from 30 yards that struck the crossbar, allowing Makenna O’Connor to head the rebound past the goalkeeper.

Coach Ed Anibal praised his team’s performance and mental toughness throughout the week. Reflecting on the Tuesday shootout win, he noted, “The players practice pk’s in a game-like situation most days (lots of screaming and yelling). They are a talented and confident group and at the end of the day, they always feel like they will prevail.” He added, “Plus, we’re used to them. We’ve decided a few games this year but in a shootout.”
Despite the narrow loss to Blair, one of the top teams in Class B and the conference, Anibal viewed it positively. “This was a great game for our team,” he said. “I felt we matched up pretty well and were as physical as they were. The girls grew in confidence as the game went on and in the end, one play made the difference. A lot was taken from that contest which will benefit us moving forward.”
The coach highlighted the team’s ability to bounce back quickly after the emotional shootout victory. “This is part of class B, our conference and our schedule. We try to play the best so we can be the best at the end of the day,” Anibal explained.

The Badgers’ defense and goalkeeping drew particular praise for keeping games close. Anibal mentioned that one of the team’s greatest strengths has always been defense. “They are led by Claire Miller, Emma Willoughby, Ava Garton and Tora Aken,” he said. “Tough and physical. Rilynn Mercer has been incredible since earning the goalkeeping position. She is athletic and fearless… all qualities gks need.”
Anibal also emphasized the team-first culture fostered by the senior class. “This year the seniors chose we over me as the team phrase. Although we have some standout players, we give credit to all players for our success,” he said. Looking ahead, he added, “continue to fight and they will be rewarded.”
On senior night against Blair, Anibal reflected warmly on the leadership and impact of this year’s senior group. “I love the way the seniors have created a fun and winning culture for Bennington HS girls soccer,” he noted. “I have watched them mature and develop their sense of community through their involvement in sport. I know all of them will go on to be successful young ladies and I’m encouraged that next year’s class will continue the positive culture and commitment of this year’s.”
The Badgers will look to carry the lessons and confidence from this challenging week into the remainder of the season as they continue pursuing their goals in Class B.
