Bennington Volleyball Earns Win Over Norfolk, Splits Tournament Matches

The Bennington High School varsity volleyball team put together a busy stretch of competition last week, picking up a 3-1 victory over Norfolk on Thursday before going 1-2 at a tournament Saturday.

The results left the Badgers with a 6-5 record on the season.

Bennington opened the week September 3 at home against Norfolk, rallying after dropping the opening set to earn a 3-1 victory.

Norfolk took the first set 25-20, but the Badgers responded by winning the next three sets 25-22, 25-15 and 25-15.

Bennington finished with 51 kills compared to 46 for Norfolk and also held advantages in serving aces, 8-3, and assists, 51-45. The Badgers recorded 60 digs.

Quinn Sanmann (pictured above) led Bennington with 11 kills, while Paige Gargano added seven kills while hitting .500. Sophia Fogelstrom also contributed seven kills.

The victory was Bennington’s fifth of the season and gave the Badgers momentum heading into Saturday’s tournament.

Bennington opened tournament play against Millard West, falling 2-0. The Wildcats took the sets 25-19 and 25-12.

The Badgers recorded 18 kills in the match, with Laila McGaugh (pictured below) leading the team with four kills while hitting .375. Berkeley Osborne recorded one kill while posting a perfect 1.000 hitting percentage.

Bennington also finished with 43 digs, led by its defensive effort, while Osborne contributed to the team’s offensive production from the setter position.

The Badgers then faced O’Gorman of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, in their second tournament match. O’Gorman earned a 2-0 victory.

Bennington recorded 11 kills, three total blocks, four serving aces, 27 digs and 11 assists in the match. Gargano (pictured below) and Sanmann each recorded three kills, while Fogelstrom contributed a block.

The Badgers closed the tournament with a strong performance against Fremont, earning a 2-0 victory.

Bennington controlled both sets, winning 25-20 and 25-10.

The Badgers recorded 20 kills compared to four for Fremont and added six total blocks, seven serving aces and 38 digs. Bennington also held an 18-4 advantage in assists.

Gargano led the attack with four kills while hitting .667 and also recorded four total blocks. Fogelstrom hit .667 while recording two kills.

The tournament victory brought Bennington’s season record to 6-5.

The Badgers will return to action Thursday, Sept. 10, when they travel to face Gretna in a non-conference matchup.
