A 7-year-old Bennington girl is recovering after being struck by a vehicle Wednesday evening near North 165th Street and Cleveland Boulevard.

Emergency crews from Bennington Fire & Rescue and Douglas County Sheriff’s Office were dispatched to the scene shortly after 7 p.m. following reports of a child who had been hit by a vehicle.

Initial emergency radio traffic indicated the child was awake and breathing but had suffered multiple injuries. Fire and rescue personnel established command at the scene while providing medical care. It was confirmed she had been riding a bicycle when the crash occurred and was suspected she had been dragged a short distance.

Earlier this morning, the child’s mother shared an encouraging update on her daughter’s condition.

“She is so strong,” she said. “A couple fractures but no internal bleeding. She will have a road to recovery but I’m thankful as it could have been much worse.”

Authorities have not yet released details about what led up to the collision, and the circumstances surrounding the crash remain under investigation. Information about the driver has also not yet been released other than they live in the same neighborhood. Speed, alcohol, or drugs are not suspected to be a factor.

Sheriff Aaron Hanson commented in a statement this morning, “As the summer continues, we anticipate seeing busier streets and more individuals out on bikes and scooters. The DCSO asks everyone to be cautious and defensive on our roadways, especially in neighborhoods. Everyone plays a role in safety: drivers, riders, and parents. We ask that everyone utilizing a roadway be accountable for one-another. Whether you are on one wheel or eighteen, safe roads are everyone’s responsibility.”

Bennington Buzz will continue to follow this developing story and will provide updates as additional information becomes available from investigating authorities.

Everyone involved remains in our thoughts.
