Battling strong winds all day at Tiburon Golf Course, the Bennington boys golf team delivered a strong performance and earned runner-up honors at the Gretna Invitational last Tuesday for their first meet of the season.

Bennington finished with a team score of 318, just six strokes behind champion Gretna East, which posted a 312. The second-place result came against a competitive field and showcased the team’s resilience in tough conditions.

Sophomore Austin Jochum (pictured below) led the Badgers, shooting a 75 to medal and place third individually.

Head Coach Craig Nichols was proud of how his team competed.

“I liked how the team grinded through the field of players and wind,” Nichols said. “They kept battling and that’s all you can ask for.”

Looking ahead to the rest of the season, Coach Nichols outlined his expectations for this experienced group. “We have an experienced passionate group that wants to compete whenever they get opportunities,” he said. “We would like to compete in conference & districts and finish towards the top. If we are fortunate enough to compete at Scottsbluff in the postseason we would like to land towards the top 3 if we play up to our potential.”

Nichols also noted areas the team will continue focusing on in practice. “Like always, we will continue to work on short game, chipping & putting,” he added.

The strong runner-up finish at the Gretna Invitational provides an encouraging start for Bennington as they work toward their goals with an eye on postseason honors as the season is just beginning.
