Two Bennington students are being recognized for their character, achievements and service to the community as part of a regional awards program honoring the children of first responders.

The First Responders Foundation recently announced its 2026 Awards of Excellence honorees, a group of 33 high school seniors from five counties across Nebraska and Iowa. Among those selected are Bennington students Dane Casey and Zoe Nelson.

According to the organization, the Awards of Excellence recognize students who demonstrate “outstanding character, balanced achievement, and commitment to their communities.”

Founded in 2008 and based in Omaha, the First Responders Foundation is a nonprofit dedicated to supporting first responders and their families through wellness programs, training, and community initiatives. Its mission is to serve and honor first responders while building appreciation for their work and enhancing public safety.

The Awards of Excellence program was established in 2017 to specifically honor graduating high school seniors who are the children of first responders. Recipients are selected not only for academic performance, but also for their involvement in school activities, volunteerism, work ethic and overall contributions to their communities.

Each spring, honorees are recognized at a formal reception and receive scholarship support to assist with their future educational goals.

Eligibility for the award includes having a parent who serves as a first responder, including law enforcement, fire, EMS, or related roles, in Douglas, Sarpy or Pottawattamie counties, as well as maintaining at least a “C” grade point average and demonstrating strong character and community involvement.

The foundation emphasizes that the award is also a recognition of the unique sacrifices made by first responder families. Children of first responders often navigate unpredictable schedules, missed holidays and the inherent risks of their parents’ professions.

Casey and Nelson’s inclusion in this year’s class highlights both students’ accomplishments and their connection to families who serve on the front lines of public safety.

The 2026 honorees will be formally celebrated at an awards reception later this month.
