The Bennington Public Schools Foundation recognized a standout community leader Saturday night, naming Allyson Slobotski as the 2026 Blue Apple School Volunteer of the Year during its annual gala.

The award is presented each year to a volunteer who embodies a spirit of service and a willingness to help others. In remarks shared during the event, Slobotski was described as someone who consistently goes above and beyond for students, staff and families across Bennington Public Schools.

“This year’s recipient is described as going above and beyond for the students, staff and families of Bennington Public Schools,” Executive Director Blake Thompson said at the gala. “She gives her time and whole heart to ensure the needs of this district are met. She creates an environment that invites open communication and transparency that is imperative to the needs of the community. As a true ambassador for community volunteerism, this person demonstrates extraordinary dedication, professionalism, strategy, leadership and service to the Bennington Public Schools and broader community.”

Currently serving as President of the Board of Education, Slobotski said the recognition came as a complete surprise.

“To be honest, I was totally shocked. The room was full of community members who have all given their time and talents to our community. I was humbled to simply be in their company. It is truly an honor to be named the 2026 Volunteer of the Year,” she said.

While she noted that recognition is not the motivation behind her work, the award holds special meaning. “I think most people invested in community service don’t do it for the recognition, but it’s so nice to be recognized,” Slobotski said. “To me, the award is symbolic of all the hard work I’ve done in the background/behind the scenes to ensure Bennington Public Schools is the best place to be a student and teacher in Nebraska.”

Her commitment to the district began years ago as a parent volunteer and she shared her passion for public education. “I believe a quality education means we are giving our young people an opportunity to be successful,” she added. Her volunteerism began when her sons were in elementary, but she wanted to give back in more ways than that. “I decided to run for school board 5 years ago when I felt there was an opportunity for me to give back to a community that has meant so much to my family,” she said.

Throughout her service, Slobotski said it is the everyday interactions with students and the pride of the community that continue to inspire her. “My cup is filled visiting our schools. I love reading to our students and answering their questions. I will never forget when one elementary student who I was reading to thought I was President of the United States. It was so cute!” she recalled. “I also love seeing our community show up for our students whether it be at the opening night of the musical or at a Friday night football game. There is so much pride in our community, and the schools are at the heart of it all.”

Slobotski further emphasized that strong schools rely on strong community partnerships. “Community involvement is critical for the success of our local schools. I view it as a partnership – the schools and the community work together to ensure we are providing a quality education to our young people,” she said.

As this year’s Blue Apple Volunteer of the Year, Slobotski’s leadership and service highlight the vital role community members play in supporting and strengthening local education.
