Bennington Public Schools (BPS) proudly recognizes three outstanding staff members as the December recipients of the Shine Your Light Award. This monthly program, supported by the Bennington Public Schools Foundation, honors employees who consistently go above and beyond to positively impact colleagues, students, and the broader school community. Nominations come from peers, parents, and students, with two to three individuals selected each month for their exceptional dedication.
The honorees are Kaitlin Duncan, a Special Education Teacher at Pine Creek Elementary; Don Combs, a Bus Driver for the district; and Rob Loptin, a Maintenance staff member at Bennington South Middle School. Their stories highlight the diverse ways BPS staff shine every day.
Kaitlin Duncan: A Dedicated Champion for Students with Special Needs

At Pine Creek Elementary, Special Education Teacher Kaitlin Duncan is celebrated for her unwavering commitment to putting students first. Nominated by colleagues, families, and students alike, she is described as a caring and dedicated leader who infuses her classroom with calm, support, and encouragement. Duncan collaborates closely with paraprofessionals to foster a positive and inclusive learning environment, and her expertise not only bolsters her immediate team but also contributes to statewide teacher preparation efforts. Families frequently note the meaningful progress their children achieve under her guidance.
Duncan expressed deep gratitude upon receiving the award. “Receiving this award is truly an honor,” she said. “Knowing the nominations came from colleagues, families, and students makes it especially meaningful, and I’m very grateful for the kind words and support.”
What drives her daily passion? “I genuinely love my job and the students I work with each day,” Duncan explained. “Building strong relationships with my students is always my first priority, as it helps me better understand and support their individual needs.”
She credits much of her classroom success to strong teamwork. “We are fortunate to have an amazing team of paraprofessionals at Pine Creek,” she noted. “I focus on building positive relationships, checking in often, and supporting our team through collaboration, modeling, and feedback to keep our department running smoothly, even on busy, unpredictable days!”
For Duncan, the greatest rewards come from witnessing growth over time. “The most rewarding part of my work is building lasting relationships with students and their families,” she shared. “Being part of their growth over time and seeing their progress reinforces my passion for special education and behavior intervention.”
