The Bennington Badgers girls wrestling team kicked off their home season in style, sweeping both duals in a triangular meet against Gretna and Omaha Buena Vista on Thursday night. The Badgers started off with a tougher challenge from Omaha Buena Vista, taking a 54-30 victory before overwhelming Gretna 66-15 to take a second victory. Standouts like Maren McIlnay, Katelyn Kinsella, Addi Shippen, Mia Anderson, Sophia Crumly, Sabhana Thapa, Jorja Baca, and Katie Kos delivered quick pins in both matches, showcasing the team’s depth and aggression across several classes.
Head coach Craig Pokorny highlighted the importance of bonus points in securing the wins. “I knew that first duel [against Buena Vista] was going to be really close. We talked about getting bonus points. That could be the difference. All the girls got bonus points when they needed to and we picked up some small upsets and that really secured the duel for us.”
Pokorny expressed pride in his team’s resilience during their first home triangular of the year. “The girls going out and giving their best effort,” is what made him the most proud. “It’s the first dual triangular of the year at home. Had some nerves, so just getting used to things. They’ve gone out and battled hard after being a little out of sorts and brought it home.” The Badgers look poised for a strong season ahead—great job, ladies!
