Despite the chilly single-digit temperatures and steady snowfall this morning, the Bennington Running Club’s first annual Toy Drive Christmas Run drew a small but dedicated turnout of runners. Participants gathered at Bennington Elementary at 8am, bringing unwrapped toys to donate to the Open Door Mission for children in need this holiday season. The festive 5K route headed west on the trail along Bennington Road, through snow-covered trails into Newport Landing, and back to the school. Santa Claus himself came down from the North Pole, cheering runners at both the start and finish lines, while some participants added to the fun by dressing in holiday costumes.
After crossing the finish line, runners, families and even Santa made their way to Cup & Cone for a warm post-run gathering. Everyone enjoyed fresh pastries, hot drinks, and quality time visiting with Santa, creating a delightful surprise for other locals stopping by the shop.
Bennington Running Club founder David Greene shared his inspiration for the event and the club itself. “It was something that I wanted to start because I noticed a lot of people in the area, in the neighborhoods, running. So I thought I might as well just start a little running club, get people together, meet neighbors, meet friends.” He emphasized the community focus: “This is very community driven. It’s completely about making a bond between people- doing something difficult with a group of people brings that bond together.” The club hosts welcoming weekly Saturday runs for all paces and skill levels. He is looking forward to this being an annual event that grows each year.
