On Thursday night, the Bennington Legion Post 266 presented a generous $9,000 check to the local Legion baseball team, as part the organization’s commitment to youth development through sports. Dr. Steven Youngberg, a dedicated Legion member, highlighted the practical impact of the funding during the event. “They will use the money for uniforms, equipment, travel, etc.,” Youngberg explained, emphasizing how the donation directly supports the team’s operational needs.
Youngberg also shared the deeper motivations behind Post 266’s sponsorship, framing it as a vital partnership that aligns with national priorities and community reciprocity. “They have us as sponsors. Legion baseball is a legion national directive program,” he noted, pointing to the program’s official endorsement by The American Legion to foster youth values like courage, respect, and citizenship. He added a personal touch on the mutual benefits: “They help us with our yearly fireworks operation.” This not only sustains the team’s activities but also reinforces the program’s enduring legacy, with teams now active in all 50 states and Canada, engaging thousands of players annually.
Looking ahead, Youngberg expressed optimism about the lasting influence of the program on its young athletes. When asked about key takeaways, he responded, “Teamwork and leadership.” These principles echo the foundational Code of Sportsmanship adopted by the program in 1928, which pledges players to “keep faith with my teammates” and “keep a stout heart in defeat,” instilling lifelong skills that extend far beyond the diamond. Through such support, Post 266 is helping shape the next generation of leaders, one pitch at a time.
