On September 24, Bennington resident Heather Goertz suffered a massive hemorrhagic stroke and has been fighting for recovery ever since. Known to her family as a “resilient, impactful, inspiring, vibrant, witty” soul, Heather is “mom” to nine children, “MIL” to two, “GG” to three grandchildren, and the wife and soulmate of her husband for the past 30 years. Described as a “cheerful giver, intentional with her words and cheesy with her emotions,” Heather has spent her life being the first to show up for others. Now, in a beautiful full-circle moment, the Bennington community is lining up for her.

Since day one, friends, neighbors, and even acquaintances have answered every call for help. “People have just been there to say ‘yes’ when asked to help,” says daughter Tayler Wickham. “Whether it was transporting kids, providing meals, cleaning the house, providing respite so we could step away from the hospital- people have continued to show up.” The most common reason people give for stepping in? “Because she would be first in line” if the tables were turned. Nearly two months later, the support hasn’t slowed, turning what could have been an overwhelming burden into a testament of love that has left the family feeling “loved, seen and supported.”

The biggest challenge ahead is the cost of future care, most likely private-pay home care once Heather is able to return home. That’s why the community is coming together for “HIIT for Heather,” a family-friendly fundraiser designed around everything Heather loves. On Saturday, November 29 from 9 a.m. to noon at Bennington Middle School, the day kicks off with worship music and a major recovery update, followed by a 10 a.m. all-bodies HIIT workout, kids’ activities, smoothie bar, fellowship, silent auction, live auction, and “HealThy Heather” t-shirt pickup. Donations will be accepted at the door, and for those unable to attend, contributions can be made via Venmo or to the account at i3 Bank.

“It’s very hard to put into words just how loved, seen and supported we all feel because of the community that’s been surrounding our family since September 24,” Tayler shares. “Thank you for continuing to be here and follow our mom’s recovery.” Come celebrate Heather’s fighting spirit, get moving together, and help ensure she can continue healing at home surrounded by the people she loves most. See you November 29!
