Please join us in celebrating two outstanding educators who were honored with the October Shine Your Light Awards — a recognition given monthly to Bennington staff who go above and beyond for students, colleagues, and our community. This month’s recipients include Dylan Mahoney, 4th Grade Teacher at Heritage Elementary, and Ryan Story, paraprofessional at Stratford Elementary.

Dylan is known for creating a classroom where every child can thrive through patience, creativity, and a genuine commitment to student success. In his own words: “Being recognized with this award means a lot both personally and professionally. Personally, it’s incredibly humbling to know that the time, energy, and care poured into my classroom each day are making a difference. Professionally, it’s a reminder of why I love this job. Helping students grow not just academically, but as kind, confident people. I’m surrounded by an amazing team at Heritage, and I truly believe this recognition reflects the collective effort of our entire school community.”

He also shared how he reaches kids every day: “I try to engage every student by building strong relationships first. When students know they’re valued, they’re more willing to take risks and push themselves. I focus on creating a classroom environment where every child feels seen, heard, and supported. Where mistakes are viewed as part of learning. Whether it’s through small group instruction, hands-on lessons, or simply celebrating effort, I try to meet students where they are and help them believe in their own potential.”

Ryan Story is celebrated at Stratford Elementary for his compassion, dedication, and the meaningful connections he builds with students. His positivity, encouragement, and daily commitment to helping every child grow make a remarkable impact across the Stratford community. Both award winners remind us of the incredible people shaping the next generation right here in Bennington.
